MFT Licensure and Portability in Rhode Island

Rhode Island has adopted the Access MFTs model law, so licensure by endorsement is streamlined. What the board actually asks a licensed MFT for, and where applications stall.

Rhode Island Has Adopted Access MFTs

Rhode Island is one of the 17 jurisdictions that have adopted the Access MFTs model law. In practice that means the board is not going to re-evaluate work you have already had evaluated once: your degree, your post-degree supervised clinical hours and your National MFT Examination result are taken as read on the strength of a valid, unrestricted license in another state. What remains is an application, a fee, and whatever Rhode Island adds on its own account — commonly a background check, sometimes a jurisprudence exam on its own statutes.

Adoption changes with legislative sessions — four states adopted the model in 2026 alone. Confirm the current position with the destination board before relying on it — this page reflects our last verification, not a live feed.

Endorsement into Rhode Island

A valid, unrestricted MFT license in another state — under the Access MFTs model this largely replaces re-proving the items below

A completed application and the board fee. The model streamlines the evidence, not the paperwork

Anything Rhode Island adds on its own account, commonly a background check and sometimes a jurisprudence exam on its statutes

A graduate degree from a COAMFTE-accredited program, a CACREP Marriage, Couple and Family Counseling program, or coursework the board accepts as content-equivalent

A passing score on the National MFT Examination

Post-degree supervised clinical experience, in the hours and configuration this board sets — the requirement that varies most between states

Verification of every license you currently hold or have ever held, sent board to board

A criminal background check, fingerprint-based in most jurisdictions

Where Rhode Island Applications Go Wrong

Assuming the model law removes the application. It removes duplicative evidence — you still file, still pay, and still wait on the board.

Assuming it removes a jurisprudence exam. Several adopting states kept theirs.

Supervised-hours documentation. It is the single most common gap, and it is the hardest to fix late — supervisors move, practices close, and a board wants the record in its own format.

Letting the license you already hold lapse or pick up an open complaint while an application is pending. Endorsement rests on it being in good standing.

Asking the wrong office. Rhode Island Board of Marriage and Family Therapy owns this, and a question answered elsewhere is a month lost.

We file the Rhode Island endorsement and carry it to issue.

Eligibility screening, document prep, transcript chasing, board and Commission follow-ups, and renewal tracking.

Two things still catch people in Rhode Island. The model law removes duplicative evidence, not the process: this is an application to Rhode Island Board of Marriage and Family Therapy, it has a fee, and it produces a Rhode Island license you will renew on Rhode Island's own schedule with Rhode Island's own continuing-education requirements. And it rests on the license you already hold being valid and unrestricted — a lapse or an open complaint elsewhere while the application is pending is the avoidable way to lose the route.
