Ohio: We Check This Board Directly
Ohio is not among the seventeen states that have adopted the Access MFTs model law. That is a narrower statement than it sounds. Endorsement almost certainly exists here — nearly every board has some route for an already-licensed therapist — and AAMFT reports seven further states that reached the same streamlined position independently, without joining the initiative and under their own names. We do not know which seven. So the honest answer for Ohio is that the route has to be confirmed with the board rather than assumed in either direction.
Adoption changes with legislative sessions — four states adopted the model in 2026 alone. Confirm the current position with the destination board before relying on it — this page reflects our last verification, not a live feed.
Ohio License Requirements
A Ohio license, applied for directly with the board
A graduate degree from a COAMFTE-accredited program, a CACREP Marriage, Couple and Family Counseling program, or coursework the board accepts as content-equivalent
A passing score on the National MFT Examination
Post-degree supervised clinical experience, in the hours and configuration this board sets — the requirement that varies most between states
Verification of every license you currently hold or have ever held, sent board to board
A criminal background check, fingerprint-based in most jurisdictions
Where Ohio Applications Go Wrong
Reading "not on the Access MFTs list" as "no endorsement route". Seven states reached the same streamlined position independently and AAMFT does not name them; Ohio may well be one.
Starting the application after accepting a role. Board queues are the long pole and they do not compress for a start date.
Supervised-hours documentation. It is the single most common gap, and it is the hardest to fix late — supervisors move, practices close, and a board wants the record in its own format.
Letting the license you already hold lapse or pick up an open complaint while an application is pending. Endorsement rests on it being in good standing.
Asking the wrong office. Ohio Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board owns this, and a question answered elsewhere is a month lost.
