Missed a Renewal? Late Fees, Lapse and Reinstatement

Renewal deadlines pass for ordinary reasons. A notice went to an old address, a payment failed, a mandatory course was not finished in time, or the date simply got lost among several licenses. The consequences depend less on why it happened than on what you do in the following days.

Late renewal and reinstatement are different processes

Many boards distinguish between renewing late and reinstating an expired license. Late renewal, where it exists, usually means the board still accepts a renewal for a limited time after expiration, often with an added fee and proof of the continuing education that would have been required anyway. The term grace period is common, but it rarely means the license stays valid during that window.

Reinstatement is typically a fuller process. Depending on the state, it can involve a new application, updated background checks, additional continuing education, a jurisprudence exam or other conditions. Some boards move a license from late renewal to reinstatement after a set time. Others have no late period at all. Because these rules are set by each state and revised over time, confirm the specifics with the board that issued the license.

Steps to take this week

First, stop practicing in that state until you know your status. Treating clients under an expired license can be unlicensed practice, which is a far more serious matter than a late fee. Arrange coverage or reschedule where you need to.

Second, look up the license on the board's public verification to see exactly how it is listed. Then call or email the board and ask three questions: is a late renewal still possible, what does it require, and what is the status of the license right now.

Third, gather the continuing education for the period, including any mandatory topics, and submit whatever the board requires as quickly as you can. Save every confirmation.

How a lapse affects portability

Streamlined endorsement under the Access MFTs model law depends on an active, unrestricted license in good standing. A license that expired, even briefly, may not meet that standard during the gap, and the lapse can remain visible on verification afterward. An applicant who would otherwise have moved quickly can be shifted into individual review, with more documentation and more time.

If you have an application pending in another state, tell that board what happened rather than waiting for verification to reveal it. Explaining an administrative lapse is routine. An omission discovered later is not.

Preventing the next one

Keep every expiration date in one calendar with reminders set months ahead, and check each license's public verification after you renew to confirm the new date posted. If you plan to stop practicing in a state, ask whether it offers inactive status. Where it does, it is generally easier to restore than a license allowed to expire.
